The Birth of USC Nepal
USC Canada is a voluntary organization working to promote strong, healthy, and just communities in developing countries. USC works with partner organizations in Africa, Asia, and Latin America to strengthen community livelihoods, promote food security, and support peoples’ actions for social justice and equality. In Canada, USC builds support and awareness for international social change through public education and policy dialogue.

Founded in 1945 by humanitarian Lotta Hitschmanova as the Unitarian Service Committee, USC Canada began as a small group of aid workers sending supplies to war-torn Europe. A recipient of the Order of Canada, Lotta became a venerated symbol of how one person can make a difference in the lives of many, making 56 Sparks Street [Ottawa, Ontario CANADA] a household name through her numerous television ads.

USC Canada began working in Nepal in 1977 on child development and community health programs. Over the years, operations evolved into a local NGO support program. In 1987, the focus of the program shifted to supporting sustainable livelihoods, particularly in remote areas of Nepal. In those areas, USC could work with the most marginalized and disadvantaged populations, where the majority of the population lacks access to basic social infrastructure. USC Canada has nationalized its operations in Nepal, and now USC Nepal is an independent, Nepali NGO.

USC Nepal and USC Canada maintain close ties.
