Skill Training - The Manufacture of Dhaka

Bringing employment skills to poor areas builds self esteem, dignity and a strong viable set of family and community values.  WFN strives to build the employment base of Nepal.

Dhaka is an exquisite cotton fabric hand woven in numerous colours with an infinite and unlimited number of patterns.

There are a number of steps and processes which are required to make dhaka cloth.  The first step is for farmers to grow high quality cotton, harvest the cotton, and bring it to market.

The cotton is bought and spun into thread.

The thread washed and then it is dyed and cartefully dried before being turned over to the weavers of The Women's Foundation of Nepal to make Dhaka cloth on their looms.

The final step is for the weavers to make the coloured threads into exquisite fabric.  The fabric is then fashioned into many different useful items ranging from clothing to pillows.

And, by the way, did we mention the beautiful fabrics that are found at Maheela, the dhaka shop of The Women's Foundation of Nepal?
