A Community Dreams of More School Space
This is the school where WFN organized several free health camps for the poor people:
Dahachowk V.D.C – 9 is very close to Kathmandu. The main occupation of the people is agriculture. There is one school named Shree Janachaetana Primary School. This is a government school but the government is not providing even the very basic facilities to the school.
Currently, the school house has one room. Using grass and bamboo the people made two classrooms. The school includes classes up to grade three .
For two classes there are separate classrooms but the students of the third class must share space with the other grades. There are two teachers covering three classes at the same time and they even do not have any office space.
There is also a problem with drinking water and toilets. Students have to run to a nearby field and use it as a bathroom. This is in the middle of the residential area for the people. There are 79 houses and in the 79 households are 45 children of school age. More then 50% of school age children are not school going. Many want to be in school!
Most of the residents of that village are illiterate. They are of the Tamang ethnic group. Most of the villagers are very poor.
Shree Janachaetana primary school is the only school in the village. The school house is located in the middle of the village. People of that area are not able to send their children to other places because of distance, political conditions and economical crises. So, children who have completed the course up-to grade three are compelled to stop their education. School teachers and the school management committee are talking about extending the school to grade five.
Objective of their program:
- To make the school building into six rooms.
- To provide children good class rooms where they have a good sound environment in which to study.
- To motivate the parents of the children to send their children to school.
- To build a good base for the community's future.
Activities of the program:
- Convince the local people to contribute their time to make school a community school.
- To convince the local committee to make the school building. To begin construction of the building : Volunteers can support this project by helping build the school house.
Budgeting:
- They need five more rooms - but each new room will be very supportive for the students.
- To build the school of clay and stone or the using the local materials for each room it cost Nrs. 80000.
- The Women's Foundation of Nepal would like to help them make four rooms.
- Total cost for four rooms will be Nrs 320,000.(Three hundred twenty thousand Nepali rupees)
- But if we will have 80000. we can make one room and work to build another room, and another room . . . .in the future.
