Letters from Renu and the WFN staff . . .
A diary of social work in Nepal . . . November 21, 2006
The Letters from Renu on these pages detail an ongoing saga of abuse. WARNING: these letters have graphic descriptions which may be disturbing. These are stories of real people in terrible trouble. The good news is that there are many individuals who are working to set the world right in Nepal. WFN is one of the groups seeing to it that something is being done to help.
Social workers taking care of lots of people in Jhapa and Morang Districts . . . .
Dear Brian,
I just arrived back form the village.
Modern technology create lots of problems. In some ways it is very good to have lots of communication but the other side is that small things can cause lots of problems. Our computer's harddisk is dead! Teh entire system does not work. We have lost all our information on the computer. Some files were backedup but I did not know how to backup the emial - so we lost all that information from the computer. We were not een able to save addresses from my computer.
Most of the time I have been outside of Kathmandu. I arrived back yesterday. Two weeks ago I went to Jhapa and Morang (see map [+]) and stayed one week. This time I stayed 5 days . It is very good to meet the members and district staff of WFN who are very active. On the other hand, it is very hard to see all the poverty and disease. Poverty is very high.
I went to Jhapa and Morang on 16 of November and came back today Emmo, a German dentist, is helping us to provide dental support in the village.
This time we give school dresses to those girls who could not go to school because they had no school uniform. A total of 60 girls received school uniforms. They are very happy. We also distributed 200 blankets to the poor women who had nothing in thier houses to cover them.
We also visited Morang district where are our saving groups. In one very poor area, We met a sick boy. Hundreds and hundreds of families are living without homes. They live in very small huts. Several children are attending school. In that area also we met a girl who has big health problems. She looks like a six year old girl. Her mother does not know her age. Neighbors said she is 12 years old. All her nails are very big, bent at the top and and broken from the middle. The toe nails are worse. There is blood dripping from the toe nails. She could hardily take a breath. We called an ambulance immediately and sent her to Dharan hospital, BP Korila hospital. They checked her . Her blood is very thick. Her heart valves are damaged. They immediately admitted her to the ICU. They took her blood out and gave her saline water from the vein. They will give her blood back again.
I will write you again soon. Your sincerely, Renu Sharma
