Letters from Renu and the WFN staff . . .

A diary of social work in Nepal . . . August 22, 2008

The Letters from Renu on these pages detail an ongoing saga of abuse. WARNING: some letters have graphic descriptions which may be disturbing. These are stories of real people in terrible trouble. The good news is that there are many individuals who are working to set the world right in Nepal. WFN is one of the groups seeing to it that something is being done to help.

Dear  Brian ,
Namaskar
Thank you for your kind email, thoughts and support to us. I now send information on the flood in Nepal. It is very difficult for thousands and thousands of people. Sunsari is one of our project areas. Our members are also victims of the flood and, tragically, some have lost their life. Here are more photos of people helping others to safety.
Your sincerely,
Renu

Hundreds and hundreds people have died. On August 18, Sunsari district villages, Kusawa, Haripur, Sripur, and Laukhi , were flooded when the Sapta Koshi breached its embankments (map of flooded area). Over 8000 houses were flooded. Over 25,000 people were displaced.  Around 60,000 people are affected. In India 27 bodied have been found. Some people are still living in trees and on the tops of the houses. Security people, social organization and local people are helping to rescue them from the flood. Still around 8000 people are in the high risk and need to be evacuated.

These flood affected people are staying in areas near the river side, or different neighboring villages.

They have no food, clothing, or clean water.  Many people are living without shelter. Many children are suffering with diarrhea and fever. Disease relaed to foul water have begun to show up in the children.  Especially women and children are badly affected.

Since the beginning of the flooding, WF has been on the scene and helping people  - every day. Yesterday the team from The Women’s Foundation began fact finding in the areas of West Kusba where there are around 8000 people.  No organization or government services had reached that area.

The people living in West Kusba have no clothes or food to eat. We came across three children, Prinita, a 10 year old girl, Mira Mandal, a six year old girl, and Sugar Mandal, a one year old boy. These children were unconscious - suffering from starvation. Children who had died were being buried in the ground.

Until proper supplies can be brought into this area, The Women’s Foundation would like to support these people.

Your generous support will be very helpful to save lives. Even one package of biscuits will save one child for one day.  Please, donate now, what you can.
