Letters from Renu and the WFN staff . . .

A diary of social work in Nepal . . . March 23, 2008

The Letters from Renu on these pages detail an ongoing saga of abuse. WARNING: these letters have graphic descriptions which may be disturbing. These are stories of real people in terrible trouble. The good news is that there are many individuals who are working to set the world right in Nepal. WFN is one of the groups seeing to it that something is being done to help.

Competitive markets mean WFN must do research to find raw materials and markets for its weavers . . .

(Writing from China)

Dear Brian,

Now I am seeing the different parts of China, Sanghai and Mongolia. They look quite developed where I am. The people look healthy and active.  The living standard of the people is good. I can not communicate much with them - but I have a friend who is explaining a lot to me.

I am trying to learn more about kashmir ( pashmina and silk). It is a competitive field and business people do not want to give information to other business people for fear of losing the edge. So it is not easy to find information beynd what we learn ourselves. (affecting the price of Pashmina in 2008 will be the cold weather and snow causing starvation of Pashmina goats in Mongolia.)

Yesterday, I tried to contact eight different suppliers, but none have replied to me.  Four emails were returned! I hope some of the other four will send me an email today.

The price of the  raw materials is very expensive here  compared to Nepal.  I need to make a decision about where and how to buy the raw materials.

Many greetings, lots of love and respect
Renu
