USC - River Flooding Solved in Sundhuli along Kamala River

Floods Controlled by Reclaiming BioDiversity

Along the Kamala River in Sundhuli, Nepal, there used to be davastating floods each year. With the help of USC Canada, the local people came to understand that conservation of resources and good stewardship could lead to controlling the floods as well as providing much needed natural building materials.

With two check dams in place on the river and over 80,000 tree saplings planted along the bank

Riverbank offers no flood protection.
Riverbank grows as grass holds silt.
of the Kamala River, the annual flooding has all but stopped. Today the saplings are responsible for over a half foot of new soil deposited each year along the riverbank - increasing the bank height to the point where floods are infrequent.

Read further about the Kamala riverbank - from causes of the flooding problem through to the solution. See how many hectares of land have been reclaimed and hear about what other villages are doing as a result of this pilot project. Go to USC - Reclaiming DIversity in Nepal - May 2006
